Information for People Interested in Reiki Healing
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine—part of the National Institute of Health—accepts Reiki as a type of contemporary healing modality. Pronounced as ray key, Reiki is a type of energy medicine technique that increases a person’s life energy (also known as Chi, Ki, or Prana) as well as strengthening their healing potential.
Where Reiki Originated
The healing modality was developed in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922. Mrs. Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to the West in 1937.

Etymology
It is made of two Japanese words: Rei, meaning “God’s Wisdom” or “Higher Power,” and Ki which is “Life Force Energy.” Together, Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life energy.”
Reiki and the Body
This modality balances and rebuilds an individual’s natural healing energy. When the body is in a state of balance, it tends to be less susceptible to illnesses and heals itself. So when your lifeforce’s energy is high, you are more than capable of remaining happy and healthy.

Spirituality
It may be spiritual in nature, but Reiki is not a religion. There is no dogma, and you don’t need to believe in anything before learning, using, receiving, and benefiting from Reiki. This modality will work regardless of whether or not you believe in it.
What Happens in a Session
During a Reiki treatment, you remain clothed and lie on a treatment table. This healing modality can be performed with some hands-on contact or none at all—depending on your preference. Susan will place her hands above or on your head, shoulders, abdomen, back, legs, or feet. The energy will flow through her hands and into your body. You may feel different sensations such as warmth, tingling, coolness, or deep relaxation.
Therapeutic Touch Techniques
A Reiki session can also include Therapeutic Touch. It is used to remove blockages from the body’s living energy field. After removing these obstacles, your body’s ability to heal itself is heightened. As such, these two treatment modalities work beautifully to help an individual heal.
Benefits of Reiki
Eases Physical Pain
Reiki treatments have been shown to positively impact those suffering from stress or other chronic conditions. Common examples include relief of joint or lower back pain, sciatic nerve pain, and headaches. It is also beneficial to people who have experienced trauma, such as an accident or fall, or planned surgery.
How It Happens
The treatment allows your mind and your muscles to relax, and increases the blood flow to treated areas. This, in turn, supports your healing process.
Reiki Before and After Surgery
Receiving this modality can prepare you for surgery by minimizing your anxiety and associated discomforts. It is also wonderful for post-surgical healing.
Psychological Healing
Reiki may help with the release of anger, fear, worry, sadness, depression, or other debilitating feelings. Over time, Reiki treatments will replace these feelings with feelings of self-worth, tranquility and self-confidence.
What is Therapeutic Touch?
Therapeutic Touch (TT) is accepted as a contemporary energy medicine modality by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institute of Health. It is a gentle but powerful energy healing method based on the following:
Based on Science
Since its inception in 1971, experimental research of TT has been conducted at major hospital centers and universities by scientists in nursing and other related fields. The studies consistently show a significant decrease in the healer-treated group’s hemoglobin levels. Even patients with cancer have had increased hemoglobin levels after TT sessions, despite treatment with agents that would predictably do the opposite.
Spirituality
Although it has been said that you must “believe” in it for Therapeutic Touch to work, it has been successfully used with premature babies and patients in comas. In fact, patients who have woken up from a coma have spoken the nicknames of nurses who practiced TT on them.
TT is Growing in Popularity
There are now approximately 100,000 people trained in TT living in the United States, Canada, and worldwide. For more information, visit www.therapeutictouch.org.
What Happens During a TT Session
Clients remain fully clothed and may either sit on a chair or lie on a treatment table. The practitioner will slowly sweep her hands in a series of strokes above the body from the client’s head to beyond their feet. TT induces a state of deep relaxation and peace as the body’s energy field is rebalanced. People may feel warmth, emotion or simply relaxation.
