What is Reiki?

Reiki is accepted as a contemporary energy medicine modality by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institute of Health.

Reiki (pronounced ray key) is an energy medicine technique that increases a person's supply of life energy (also known as Chi, Ki or Prana) and strengthens his or her healing potential.  Reiki was developed in Japan in 1922 by Dr. Mikao Usui, and was brought to the West in 1937 by Mrs. Hawayo Takata.  The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power, and Ki which is "Life Force Energy.” So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life energy.”

Reiki balances and rebuilds the body’s own natural healing energy.  When your body is in a state of balance, it tends to heal itself and to be less susceptible to illness and other states of dis-ease.  When your life force energy is high, you are more capable of being happy and healthy.  While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion.  It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn, use, receive and benefit from Reiki.  In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A SESSION
The benefits from receiving Reiki sessions are numerous.  Reiki has been shown to be very beneficial to those suffering from chronic conditions.  Although the list is endless, common examples include lower back pain, sciatic nerve pain, headaches and migraines, and arthritis.  It is very effective in managing blood pressure.

During a Reiki treatment, you remain fully clothed and lie on a treatment table. Reiki can be given either with some hands-on contact or on a non-contact basis - whichever you prefer.  I place my hands above or on your head, shoulders, abdomen, back, legs and feet. Reiki energy flows from my hands into your body. You may feel warmth, tingling, coolness - or simply deep relaxation as the Reiki energy flows. Typically, someone receiving Reiki will experience feelings of well-being and peace, as well as of being nurtured.

All of my Reiki sessions also include TT techniques. Therapeutic Touch is used to remove blockages from the living energy field that surrounds your body.  Removal of these blockages optimizes your body’s ability to heal itself.  Reiki then helps to rebuild your body’s natural healing energies. Thus, the two treatment modalities work beautifully together to help you to heal.

BENEFITS OF REIKI

The benefits from receiving Reiki treatments are numerous.  Reiki has been shown to be very beneficial to those suffering from stress or other chronic conditions.  Although the list is endless, common examples include joint or lower back pain, sciatic nerve pain, headaches and depression.

Reiki treatment allows your mind and your muscles to relax, and increases the blood flow to treated areas.  This, in turn, supports your healing process. Reiki is also beneficial to those suffering from a trauma such as an accident or fall, or even a planned surgery.  Reiki provides excellent support for your pre- and post-surgical care.  Receiving Reiki can prepare you for surgery by minimizing your anxiety and associated discomforts.  Reiki also supports your post-surgical healing.

Finally, Reiki may promote psychological healing, including release of anger, fear, worry, sadness or other debilitating feelings.  Over time, Reiki is noted to replace these feelings with feelings of self-worth, tranquility and self-confidence.
